  Fact:  If you are looking at optimizing your website for the search engines, then you probably already know that submitting your site is one of the steps you will need to take.  However, it is important to know what you can and not do, as many poor website owners have already found out with devastating results.
   

• Why SEO companies and automated programs can get you in trouble. 
  Fact:  Many SEO companies and websites offer tools that are supposed to help you get your website registered with the search engines, but many times these paid SEO services can get you in trouble with the very search engines that you are trying to impress.  Oftentimes, these SEO scumbags will promise you great results by submitting your website to thousands of search engines on a regular basis, which is supposed to help you.  The problem is that they don't tell you that you only need to submit your website once and only to a a small handful of search engines and directories. 
  
  Imagine going to the post office and registering your address for the first time.  After you start receiving your mail, are you going to go back and register again?  Same with the search engines.  For example, Google states in it's guidelines that repeat or worse automated submissions will not be tolerated and many websites have been ignored or banned because of this nonsense.  Fact is, you only need to submit your website once and that's it.  Please do yourself a favor and do not use an automated program or pay a SEO company.  Registering your website with the search engines only takes a few minutes and is very simple.
   

• Does the website of the SEO company rank high in the Google results and for what keywords?
  Fact:  Google the company name and if it doesn't show up at the top, you know that there is a serious problem.  Many fraudulent SEO companies have been banned outright by the search engines and you need to do your own research.  Also, does the company rank high in the search engines?  If the SEO company doesn't rank well for SEO related searches, they are trying to rip you off.
   

• Which search engines should you register your site with?
  Fact:  There are four websites that you need to register with if you want to rank in the search engines.  These four sites are Google, Yahoo, MSN, and DMOZ.  The three main search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN) either directly supply their listings or have contracts with other search engines, so you don't have to register your site with the others.  For example, I never registered any of my websites with ask.com or altavista.com, and yet my sites are ranking in them.  Virtually all smaller search engines use the main ones as a reference, so that's take care of submitting to the imaginary thousands of submissions that the SEO company brag about.
   

• What is DMOZ?
  Fact:  DMOZ is a special search directory that almost all search engines use as a reference and it is very important to register with it.  Unlike the search engines, DMOZ is run by volunteers who serve as editors and it is the human touch that allows them to look out for fraudulent or improper websites.
   

• How to register your website with the search engines.
  Fact:  Registering your website with the major search engines is very simple and only takes a few minutes. The Google submit webpage is http://www.google.com/addurl/ and is explains everything in detail.  Yahoo has a link at the bottom of its homepage called "Submit a Site" and again, the instructions are very simple.  And finally there is MSN and the direct link to submit your site is http://search.msn.com.sg/docs/submit.aspx.
   

• How to register your website with DMOZ.
  Fact:  In order to register your website with DMOZ, go to the DMOZ homepage at www.dmoz.org and simply follow the instructions.  Unlike the search engines, DMOZ wants you to pick a category for your website and add a detailed description.  The information is fairly straight forward, but keep in mind that other search engines will often use the description in their search results, so make it a good one and include the main keywords.
   

• What do you need to do after you have registered your website?
  Fact:  Nothing.  After you have registered your website, the search engines will do their part and visit your website.  Getting listed in the search engines can take several months and do not believe the SEO fraudsters who claim to get you top ranking in days or weeks.  The search engines will visit your website for a while to categorize your content and to make sure that you are not running a scam.  Despite everything that the search engines claim, do your own search and you will notice that top ranking websites have always been around for a while.
