If you want to rank high in the search engines, make sure you read check out this page and there is additional information in the other pages I have listed in the links section.  Most SEO companies will rip you off and there are ton of websites who have also been banned because of the methods that the SEO companies use. If you think that the only way you can rank high in the search engines is by paying a SEO company, think again.
After being ripped off by 2 SEO companies, I decided to teach myself how to optimize my website and once I understood how the game was played, it became very easy. I optimized my own retail website in 2005 and have been sharing my SEO basics with others ever since. • Metatags Basics #1: If you want to rank high in the search engines, you must make sure that your website is optimized.
  Fact:  Metatags have been used and abused by many so-called "professionals" and even though their importance is often times questioned, it is still smart to use them if you want to optimize your website.  In case you have never heard of metatags, they are pieces of encoding that can be added to make a web page stand out and also help the search engines.
   

• Metatags Basics #2: Web Page Title
  Fact: As the name applies, the title is simple the heading of the web page.  Note that the title is not necessary the file name.  For example, if you go to my homepage, you will see the title in very top part of your screen.
   

• Metatags Basics #3: Description
  Fact: The description is designed to give the search engines an idea of what your page is about and what the focus should be on.  If you look at the search results, you will often notice that the results show the domain name and a brief statement.

  Fact:  The keywords are the words that you want the search engines to focus on.  The keyword metatags have lost most of their importance after the search engines realized that SEO companies were manipulating web pages and keywords, but they are still important and are very easy to add.
