• Adding hidden keyword rich text.
  Fact:  Most SEO companies don't practice this nonsense any more, but it is important to point out.  Basically, a SEO company will insert a bunch of meaningless text loaded with keywords in the same color as the background, which makes it invisible to us, but very noticeable to the search engine softwares, also known as spiders.  This technique has gotten a lot of websites in trouble, so stay away from it.
   

• Constantly submitting your site to the search engines.
  Fact:  This is a sales-pitch many SEO company use and it's a great way to introduce your site to the search engines, in a very bad way that is.  It's like going to the post office and registering your address and then constantly registering again even though you are already getting your mail.  That's just plain stupid.  You only need to register once and the best way to do is directly through the search engine's website.  This process only takes a few minutes.  
   

• Signing up with a link exchange scheme.
  Fact: Joining link farms or other type of link exchange schemes has never worked and the search engines go out of their way to look for these type of deceptive methods.  One of my SEO companies convinced me to pay $99 to join a "special" group of like minded websites with the goal of getting a boost in my ranking.  It's wasn't until I researched it 3 months later that I found out that this method was not only shunned by the search engines, but the website that ran it was actually banned by Google.
   

• Make sure the SEO company or webmaster is not banned from the search engine.
  Fact:  If the SEO company is already in trouble with the search engines, chances are that they are doing something that they shouldn't.  The most notorious SEO companies are the ones that typically call or e-mail website owners and claim that they can help.  Please do yourself a favor and do not hire them.  Reputable SEO companies rank high and don't have to resort to bogus claims.  If a SEO company calls or e-mails you, do a quick Google for  their business name and their website should rank at the top.  Then search again and add the word "problems" or "complaints" and see if there are any negative comments about them.  Also, check with the BBB and research everything before you hand over your money.
   

• Duplicate contents or sites.
  Fact:  Another way to get in trouble with the search engines is to create different pages or websites with identical contents.  I have seen a few times with other competitors and every time the search engines found the site, they either drop them of the listings or banned them outright.  It's one thing to have a common theme and to mention the same contents, but simply copying the same pages rarely ever works.
   

• Hidden "doorway", "cloaking", "re-direct page", etc.
  Fact:  I bunched all of these techniques together since they are typically done by SEO companies rather than individuals.  These are all methods designed to deceive the search engine and using this method is how my site almost got banned.  Since SEO companies are not supposed to have access to your site, they often create these type of pages in the hopes of helping their clients websites, but often cause the opposite to happen.
   

• Having a SEO company use a software to create webpages.
  Fact:  The last example I want to share with you is also often done by SEO companies, which they claim will help you, but will often the opposite results.  Since high ranking websites typically feature a lot of contents, the SEO companies will often use preset webpages and then just change a few words to make it look as if they are all unique.  Search engines love to see these type of pages and punish the websites accordingly.
