  Fact:  The reason why so many pros fail at optimizing their clients websites is that they are simply not familiar with search engine optimization.  If you look at my website, you can see that I use my friend's ice hockey website as an example.  Even though there are often millions of search results for ice hockey training in Google, his website (dphockey.com) ranks at or near the top.  Look at the results and you can see how there are hundreds of professionally designed websites on page 10, 20, 100, or at the end of the search results with no hope of ever ranking high.  This is simply because the overpaid experts are great at web design, but suck when it comes to proper SEO strategies.

  Fact:  There are so many ways to keep a website from ranking well that I could write a book on its own just to cover all of the details.  Basically, you need to make sure that the website is designed from the very beginning with a SEO strategy in mind.  For example, Google mentions in it's webmasters tools section that it's often better to redo a website from scratch than try to optimize an existing website.  It's like trying to turn a van into a sports car.  To point out some of the most common flaws, I have come up with a list and hopefully it will be of some help to you.
   

• High ranking websites typically feature a lot of contents.
  Fact:  Take a look at any search result and you will notice that top ranking websites either have a ton of webpages or offer lots of specific information.  That is one of first lessons I learned and when I redid my retail website, the results were amazing.
   

• Skip the fancy stuff.
  Fact:  Professional web designers often add great features like flash videos, moving graphics, and other details, that are great to look at, but absolutely hated by the search engines.  Keep it simple and get rid of all the flashy stuff.
   

• Keyword specific contents.
  Fact:  Whatever your website is about, make sure that everything in it discusses it with lots of text and pictures.  Many web designers don't worry about the little things, but the search engines do.
   

• Make sure you use the Meta tags.
  Fact:  If you don't utilize all of the Meta tags, the search engines won't know and care what your website is about.  From naming the webpages to adding keyword rich descriptions, you have to make sure that the Meta tags are properly applied.
